The Healing Power of Handwritten Messages: Transforming Lives Through Letters of Love
For many, the act of writing letters evokes a sense of nostalgia and deep connection. Emily Pearl, a psychology major, has harnessed this timeless practice to bring comfort and joy to children facing immense challenges. Her journey began in the most personal way—through her mother’s battle with cancer—and led her to found a chapter of Letters of Love at App State. This organization sends heartfelt messages to pediatric patients, offering them solace during difficult times.

Elevating Spirits, One Letter at a Time

A Personal Journey of Connection and Communication

Emily Pearl's life was profoundly shaped by her mother's illness. Diagnosed with stage IV cancer when Pearl was just five years old, her mother's condition gradually worsened, eventually robbing her of the ability to speak. Yet, their bond remained unbroken through handwritten notes. "Even though my mom couldn’t talk, her words on paper meant everything," Pearl recalls. These simple gestures became a lifeline, fostering an unbreakable connection.Despite the limitations imposed by her mother's illness, Pearl found strength in these moments. When she was around 13, her mother would use a whiteboard to communicate, patiently responding to Pearl's questions. The act of waiting for her mother's replies instilled patience and empathy in Pearl. "It taught me the value of presence," she explains. This experience inspired her to seek ways to extend similar support to others.

Inspiring Change Through Letters of Love

Pearl's passion for helping others led her to discover Letters of Love, a nonprofit dedicated to providing emotional support to hospitalized children. Founded in 2018 by Grace Berbig, the organization accepts handmade cards and letters from individuals and organizations nationwide. Pearl saw an opportunity to make a difference and founded App State's chapter of Letters of Love.During hospital visits, Pearl often spent time with young patients, forming meaningful connections. "I wanted to give these kids someone to talk to, a friend in their time of need," she says. After her mother's passing, Pearl sought to continue her mission of supporting children. "I realized that something as simple as a letter could have a profound impact," she reflects.

Building a Community of Compassion

The App State chapter of Letters of Love aims to foster a community where students can come together to write cards for children in hospitals. Since its inception, the club has grown rapidly, now boasting over 120 members. Pearl emphasizes the importance of creating a welcoming environment. "We call ourselves 'The Love Club,' and it’s truly become a safe space for everyone involved."At each meeting, members are encouraged to express what love means to them. This process not only strengthens the bonds within the group but also ensures that the messages sent to children are genuine and heartfelt. Pearl and her team carefully review the content of each card to ensure they adhere to specific guidelines. Avoiding phrases like "stay strong" or "keep fighting," they focus on uplifting and joyful language.

Expanding Horizons and Making a Global Impact

Under Pearl's leadership, the App State chapter has expanded its reach beyond campus. Collaborations with Greek life organizations and plans to partner with UNC-Chapel Hill’s Letters of Love chapter demonstrate the growing influence of the initiative. Pearl envisions a future where Letters of Love becomes one of the largest organizations on campus. "I want to see this club thrive and touch as many lives as possible," she says. The nonprofit receives thousands of cards each month, which are then distributed to hospitals across the country. Berbig and her team work diligently to ensure that each message is appropriate and uplifting. "We do our best to send the cards to hospitals near the chapters that created them," Berbig explains. This approach adds a personal touch, making the recipients feel more connected to their supporters.

A Legacy of Kindness and Support

Pearl's dedication to Letters of Love has not only transformed the lives of countless children but has also enriched her own. "This club has given me a sense of purpose and happiness," she says. With a strong board of committed members, Pearl finds the support she needs to balance her academic and volunteer commitments. "I’ve met some of my favorite people through this experience," she adds.Looking ahead, Pearl plans to continue her involvement with Letters of Love after graduation, hoping to work full-time for the organization. Her vision for the future is clear: to expand the reach of Letters of Love and bring hope and joy to even more children in need. Through her unwavering commitment, Pearl exemplifies the power of compassion and the lasting impact of a single act of kindness.
